Headteacher

The Head Teacher is responsible for the overall strategic leadership and expansion of the school; withholding its high academic standards, pastoral care and teaching and learning.
Whilst the duties here are the responsibility of the Head Teacher, in many cases aspects will be delegated to the other senior members of staff i.e. the Leadership Team, and the Head Teacher will retain ultimate responsibility.
DUTIES
• Ensure the school works within the legislation and guidance pertaining to independent schools
• Participating in the appointment of well qualified and experienced staff, as well as managing the whole staff team; and ensuring that all staff has access to advice, support and training appropriate to their needs.
• Controlling and accounting for the finances which are under the remit of the Head Teacher with particular regard to the school’s annual budget
• Organising and implementing an appropriate curriculum for all pupils, having regard for the needs, experience, interests, aptitudes and stage of development of the pupils and the resources available to the school.
• Participating, to such an extent as maybe appropriate having regard to his/her other duties, in the teaching of pupils at the school, including the provision of cover for absent teachers.
• Evaluating the standards of the teachers and learning across the school, ensuring that appropriate standards are met; whilst implementing, promoting and withstanding an effective behaviour management policy for students to keep them informed about possible ramifications for inappropriate behaviour.
• Reporting the progress of the school to the senior management team on a half termly basis and steering reports to the relevant Local Authorities.
• Promoting effective partnerships with Local Authorities, outside agencies and other educational establishments, and ensuring the active promotion and marketing of the school and associated company wide services to the local authority.
• Assist the Business Development Manager in undertaking market research, competitor analysis and pricing; and act as the School’s representative at external forums such as presentations, and marketing fairs.

Education, Training and Professional Qualifications

Appropriate professional qualification i.e. teacher, social worker etc.
SEBD/SEN Qualification or relevant SEN Training.
Evidence of ongoing professional development.

Knowledge & Experience

Substantial experience of working with children with SEN
Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary/partnership environment
e.g. LEA, CAMHS, Social Services, Children’s Services, Connexions, Voluntary Organisations
Experience of managing change and meeting targets. Knowledge of forthcoming changes in legislation affecting Looked After Children
Experience of project management including specific experience of:
o Curriculum and/or service development
o Managing and developing staff
o Premises management
o Budget management

Knowledge of child protection issues and other child related legislation.
Knowledge of Health & Safety issues.
Desirable:
• Experience of working with young people with SEN in specialist services i.e. PRU, Children’s Home, and/or Special Schools.
• Experience of managing the balance between day to day issues and strategic longer term goals.
• Knowledge of Education legislation.
• Up to date knowledge and application of ICT to learning, teaching and management.
